The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court in Pakistan on Friday sentenced expelled Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison for corrupt practices linked to his family's purchase of upscale London flats.

The NAB court gave the verdict finding the former PM guilty in one of the three corruption cases against him in the high-profile Panama Papers scandal.

His daughter Maryam and son-in-law Captain (retired) Safdar couldn't escape the court's verdict either as they were also found guilty in the case.

Maryam has been sentenced to 7 years in jail while her husband has been given one year in prison. Nawaz Sharif has been fined USD 10 million while his daughter Maryam was handed down a USD 2.6 million fine.

Sharif, who is currently in London and was sentenced in absentia, says the charges are politically motivated and has vowed to return to Pakistan. "I will go back. I will continue my struggle even in the jail," he told reporters.
