More remains recovered near Jakarta plane crash site

Indonesian search teams today recovered more remains at the site of a plane that crashed into the Java Sea yesterday with 189 people on board near Jakarta.

Head of the Indonesian national search and rescue agency Muhammad Syaugi said the remains will be taken to Jakarta for identification and DNA testing.

Spokesman of the agency Yusuf Latif said the priority was to find the main wreckage of the plane using five war ships equipped with sonar to detect metal underwater.

A Lion Air Boeing 737 passenger plane with 188 people on board crashed into the sea shortly after taking off from the Indonesian capital on Monday.

Flight JT 610 was on a scheduled flight to Pangkal Pinang, the main town in the Bangka Belitung Islands.

According to reports, the flight lost contact with the ground 13 minutes after take-off. The jet was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, which can carry up to 200 passengers, according to air tracking service Flightradar 24.
