Government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said more than 100 reports of casualties have been received, of cars being swept away and some 40 helicopters were out on rescue missions.

Authorities have said that the assessment of casualties has been complicated because of the widespread area affected. Prime Minister Shino Abe assured the public that relief teams are doing their best.

The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that one area in Kochi prefecture received 26.3 centimeters of rainfall in three hours. It is believed to be the highest in record, which started in 1976.
