In a rain curtailed World Cup match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, the 1996 champions edged past a spirited Afghan side by 34 runs (DLS).
Afghan captain Gulbadan Naib put the Lankans in after winning the toss. The island nation managed to score 201/10 before rain came to spoil the party.
When play resumed, the Afghan side was given a revised target of 187 to chase in 41 overs.
The chase, however, started quite poorly for the Afghan side as it stumbled to 57/5.
A partnership between Gulbadin Naib and Najibullah Zadran gave Afghan team some hope, but once Naib was castled by Nuwan Pradeep, the rest of the Afghan tail could not wag much and finally fell short by 34 runs.
Nuwan Pradeep for his 4/31 was adjudged the Man of the Match.
Earlier, Kusala Parera scored a brilliant 78 of 81 balls for the Lankans and Mohammad Nabi took 4/30 for the Afghan side.
