Riding on the back of an unbeaten century by Rohit Sharma, India defeated South Africa in its first match of the ICC World Cup 2019.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, the Proteas did not have a good start with Jasprit Bumrah taking two quick wickets with the team struggling at 26/2.

The situation, however, did not improve as the introduction of spinners saw the Africans sunk to 80/4 in 20 overs.

A little wag by the tail, the Proteas managed 227/9 in 50 overs with Yuzvendra Chahal taking 4 wickets for 51 in his stipulated 10 overs.

The Indian chase also began on a shaky note with both Dhawan and Kohli back to the pavilion without scoring much.

It was then KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma and then Sharma and Dhoni who steered the Indian ship to bay and finally winning the match by 4 wickets.

Sharma in the process scored his 23 ODI hundred, going past former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly.

For his unbeaten knock of 122 in 144 balls, Rohit Sharma was adjudged the Man of the Match.

India next takes on 2015 champions Australia on Sunday.
