Earlier, Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first against Afghanistan. However, India only managed to score 224-8 with Kohli's 67 and Kedar Jadhav's 52. Afghan skipper Gulbadin Naib and spinner Mohammad Nabi claimed two wickets each.

Chasing a small target of 225, Afghanistan were all out for 213 to witness their sixth defeat in the tournament. Shami became the second Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in World Cups. Jasprit Bumrah awarded Man of the Match for his 2 for 39 (10 overs).
