Defending champions India's gold medal hopes in men's hockey ended on Thursday as the PR Sreejesh-led side lost to Malaysia on penalty shoot-out.

In the semi-finals match, Malaysia registered a 7-6 win over world No 5 India via penalty shoot-out after the match ended on 2-2 in the normal time.

With the loss, India have also failed to earn a direct qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

India had scored 76 goals in the five group matches before the last 4 match but world No 12 Malaysia made them work extremely hard.

With the first two quarters finishing goalless, the first goal of the match came in the 33rd minute. India's Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner to give India the lead.

Malaysia bounced back in the game with a goal in the 38th minute on a counter-attack after Faizal Saari slotted it past goalkepper Sreejesh.

India regained the lead with a penalty corner immediately, after two minutes, as Varun Kumar converted a fantastic variation in the penalty corner.

Malaysia equalised in the dying minutes of the match as Muhammad Razie scored in the 59th minute to take the match into the penalty shoot-out.

In the summit clash, Malaysia will face the winner of the second semi-finals between Pakistan and Japan.
