Following incessant rains in most parts of Assam and neighboring states of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland in last 72 hours, the tributaries of Brahmaputra river originates in the Naga hills region ad Arunachal Pradesh have been flowing over danger level in downstream Assam plains. The incessant rains triggered flash flood in more areas on Thursday.
Two deaths have been reported due to flood on Thursday with one each in Golghat and Majuli district.
Assam agriculture minister Atul Borah had visited some flood affected areas in Golaghat district on Thursday. "I have visited some flood affected areas today in Golaghat district. Incessant rains plus NEEPCO's excess water release from Doyang hydropower project are two prime reasons for grave flood situation in Golaghat. NEEPCO should give compensation to flood affected villagers of Golaghat", said Bora.
The minister said that relief materials have been distributed among flood affected people in the district. He had instructed district administration to arrange all essential materials for people in relief camps.
Meanwhile flood situation in Golaghat district is further worsening on Thursday as the Dhansiri and Doyang river continued to wreck havoc in the district. Near about 150 villages in the district have been affected in the current flood.
At Numaligarh in the district, surging water of Dhansiri river washed away earth of both ends of a newly constructed bridge which compels administration to restrict vehicles movement on NH -37. Khumtai, Merapani's vast areas came under flood fury.
To meet the situation emerged from flash flood, administration of both the districts have opened up relief camps and distributed flood reliefs among the affected people. SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) and NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) men have been put in service to rescue marooned people in both the districts.
Villagers in Golaghat district alleged that NEEPCO had released its excess water from a dam of its Doyang project in Nagaland which triggered flash flood in downstream areas in Golaghat district. In Sivasagar district, the Dikhou river has been flowing over danger level since last night. Surging water of Dikhou water inundated vast areas in the district.
In northern Assam, vast areas in Biswanath and Lakhimpur district have been inundated in flash flood following heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh. Most of the rivers flowing in northern Assam originate in Arunachal Pradesh hills.
In Lakhimpur district, villagers feared that NEEPCO may release excess waters from its dam of Ranganadi hydropower project I Arunachal Pradesh hills.
