Inconveniences to commuters on day 2 of Motor Transport Congress strike in Assam
Updated on

The ongoing nation wide strike called by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has caused great inconveniences to commuters in most parts of Assam on day 02 of the strike.

Road transport in Guwahati came to a near idle situation on Saturday as vehicles kept off the road in response to the indefinite strike call. In the city, gatherings of common people waiting for city buses have been seen right from morning.

From the early morning, all private long distance and city buses, mini buses, taxis went off the roads but auto-rickshaws and private vehicles plied as usual.

Only a few state-owned Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses operated.

Commuters and office goers were greatly inconvenienced by the strike and most could not avail of any transport leading to thin attendance in the offices.

"I have been waiting for city bus since morning. From yesterday, we have only government owned buses that is not enough to cater transport service for large masses in the city. Today is the second day, I could not go to office due to non availability of city buses", said an Assam government employee, waiting for city bus at Guwahati's busy Ganeshguri city bus point.

Many commuters blamed the BJP led government policies for the current transport impasse.

Transport unions across the country have started an indefinite strike from Friday last over  slew of demands, including slashing diesel prices and highway tolls, GST compliance issues, practical problems with e-way bills and some other issues.

The transport union's nation-wide strike, supply of essential commodities has already hit common masses in most parts of the country.
