In the race for Chief Minister in Karnataka, BS Yeddyurappa applied all his reach to be sworn-in as the 19th CM of the state on May 17, however, the Supreme Court (SC) had ordered to conduct the floor test on the next day that is May 18.
In the hearing of the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular)'s plea challenging Governor's decision of inviting BJP to form government in Karnataka, a bench of the SC comprising of AK Sikri, SA Bobde and Ashok Bhushan had declared that the floor test for the majority to be held on Saturday, striking a major blow to BJP.
Speaking of the Sarkaria Commision's report, the bench said that the Governor's decision to invite the party with majority is not illegal. Taking account of the current situation, it will not be wise to delay the test, it added. SC has also urged the DGP of Karnataka to tighten security during the process of the floor test and also to look into that no Anglo-Indian member is nominated to the legislative assembly.
Supporting the government Attorney General KK Venugopal requested for a secret ballot during the floor test which was refused by SC.
There have also been reports of some Congress and JD (S) members missing and in which BJP's involvement was suspected. These series of events spread a situation of panic among the two parties due to which those 115 members were sheltered in two resorts in Bengaluru.
On the other hand, Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has appointed KG Bopaiah as the pro-tem speaker of the Karnataka Assembly which was again challenged by the Congress and JD (S) in the SC.
Congress has staged protest in various parts of the country against not being invited to form government in Karnataka.
In a recent development in the floor test, BS Yeddyurappa has resigned as the Chief Minister of the state.
