Modi on TIME as ‘India’s Divider in Chief’

TheTIME magazine has put Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the cover of its May 20issue and called him "India's Divider in Chief". The cover story in themagazine was written by novelist and journalist Aatish Taseer with the headline"Can the World's Largest Democracy Endure Another Five Years of a ModiGovernment?"

The article talked about rising populism in different democracies like Turkey, Brazil, Britain, the US and India. "Of the great democracies to fall to populism, India was the first," the article reads. Criticizing the Modi government the article said, "nation's most basic norms, such as the character of the Indian state…. and its institutions, from universities to the media, were shown to be severely distrusted," the article reads. Moreover, the article has also recalled the Gujarat riots that claimed lives of hundreds of people.

Notably, PM Modi had earlier featured on the cover of TIME in 2015 and in 2012.
