Kuwait expat bill cleared, over 8 lakh Indians could be ousted

The Kuwait National Assembly has approved the draft expat quota bill which could result in over 8 lakh Indians leaving Kuwait, reported the Gulf News on Monday.

According to the bill, Indians should not exceed 15 percent of the population. The legal and legislative committee of the Assembly has determined the draft of the expat quota bill is constitutional.

It is reported Indian expats constitute over 1.45 million of the 4.3 million population of Kuwait, making Indians the largest expat community in the country.

The decision has taken shaped a month after Kuwait's prime minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah had said that the country's expatriate population should be reduced from 70 to 30 per cent of the total population in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
