The death toll due to heavy snowfall has risen to five in Jammu and Kashmir as two people died. Officials said on Sunday that two died and another two were rescued after being trapped in snowfall in Anantnag district of J&K.
The rescue team consisting of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil and police army officials traversed 30 km through snow laden terrain with the help of machinery and walked for another 8 km to reach the location at Sinthan Pass in south Kashmir where the persons were stranded, according to officials.
Officials said, "At 0500 hours on October 24, one body was located on the spot, while another person died during the trip back", adding that two people survived and were being treated for shock and hypothermia.
The higher reaches in south Kashmir and some other parts of the valley received moderate to heavy snowfall on Saturday. According to officials, the snowfall and rains triggered a mudslide that hit a nomadic tent set up in Noorpora in Tral area of Pulwama district on Friday night, leaving three people including two women dead and one critically injured. The nomads were from Reasi district in the Jammu Division.
