Amid the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan, the government of India on Thursday banned separatist group Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) of Jammu and Kashmir. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) banned group under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for alleged anti-national and subversive activities.
The decision to ban the group was taken during a high-level meeting on security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Notably, JeI has a strong cadre base across Jammu and Kashmir region. It also regards itself as separate from Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, its Indian counterpart, and backs Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan.
