Calcutta HC Orders Court-Monitored Probe Into WB Post-Poll Violence

The Calcutta High Court has ordered a court-monitored CBI probe into the West Bengal post-poll violence including rape and murder cases.

All other cases have been entrusted to an SIT for investigation, which will also be monitored by the court.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had in July slammed the West Bengal government for the alleged violence by supporters of the ruling TMC against supporters of the BJP.

It said that post-poll violence in West Bengal "resulted in disruption of life and livelihood of thousands of people and their economic strangulation".

It also said that situation in the state has become the "Law of Ruler", instead of "Rule of Law".

In view of the same, the NHRC had suggested that the violence be investigated by the CBI and tried in courts outside the state. It also recommended that the investigations of other matters should be conducted by a court-monitored SIT.

Meanwhile, the TMC government submitted an affidavit at the high court and refuted the claims, saying that NHRC's report "demonstrated bias" and had no power to suggest any probe.
