Gita Gopinath appointed IMF chief economist

India-born economist Gita Gopinath  has been appointed as the Chief Economist of The International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Gopinath will succeed Maurice Obstfeld, who would retire at the end of 2018, the IMF said.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said , "Gopinath is one of the world's outstanding economists, with impeccable academic credentials, a proven track record of intellectual leadership, and extensive international experience".

Born in Calcutta, Gita Gopinath is the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Havard University. Her research focuses on International Finance and Macroeconimics. She also serves as the Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister of Kerala.

She is second Indian after Raghuram Rajan to be appointed IMF chief economist.
