Former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been given life support after his health condition deteriorated over the past 24 hours, according to an official statement issues by All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS).

The statement was issued hours after PM Narendra Modi visited AIIMS this evening to enquire about the condition of Vajpayee who is undergoing treatment there.

The former PM overall health had deteriorated after he suffered a stroke in 2009. He was admitted to AIIMS on June 11 with kidney tract infection, chest congestion, urinary tract infection and low urine output, indicating impaired kidney functions.
