The Enforcement Directorate on Monday night arrested businessman Deepak Kochhar, husband of former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar, for alleged money laundering in an ICICI bank loan case.
He was arrested under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The ED's case is based on a complaint registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Videocon Director Venugopal Dhoot, his companies, Videocon International Electronics Ltd and Videocon Industries Ltd, as well as former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar.
"Deepak Kochhar has been arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act after daylong questioning," said an ED official.
During investigation it was revealed that loans were refinanced and new loans aggregating to Rs 1,730 crore sanctioned to Videocon Industries Ltd (VIL) and its group companies and these loans became non-performing assets (NPA) for ICICI Bank on June 30, 2017.
The CBI also alleged that Mr Dhoot invested in NuPower Renewables (company owned by Deepak Kochhar) through another company, Supreme Energy, in a quid pro quo deal via loans cleared by ICICI after Ms Kochhar took over as CEO in May 2009.
Sources in the ED said Deepak was not cooperating, for which he had to be put under arrest. He will be taken to an anti-money laundering court in Delhi.
