Hundreds of passengers on the Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express are stuck on the train about 60 km out of Mumbai since Friday night after heavy rain immobilized the city and its surrounding areas.
Two military helicopters and six NDRF boats have been sent to rescue as many as 700 people stranded on board the train near Vangani in Thane district, on Saturday.
The stranded passengers appealed for help through videos put up on social media.
As per news agency IANS report, passengers had no drinking water or food in the last 15 hours and had no way out of the train as it was cut off with five to six feet water on all sides.
Warning commuters to not step outside the train due to dangerous water levels outside, railways requested them to wait for help.
According to reports over 500 passengers, mostly women and children, have already been rescued and are being taken to Badlapur.
