Manipur has saved over Rs 100 crores owing to a decrease in fish imports in the last four and a half years, said the state Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

"Manipur's fish import reduced from 20 metric tonnes to 14 metric tonnes," said CM Biren Singh

The CM also added that Manipur's fish production capacity has increased to 36,000 metric tonnes per year resulting in reduced imports.

Manipur's requirement of fish for consumption is about 52,000 metric tonnes.

As per the statements made by Manipur CM, the state government is working closely with the fish farmers to further boost the production of fish in the state.

CM Biren Singh also informed that the Manipur government has started to take measures for production of Sareng (Freshwater Catfish).

"This will reduce the demand for imported Sareng," Manipur CM Biren Singh added.
