UNLF Chief To Arrive Manipur Today After Freed from GCJ

TheChief of Manipur-based extremist group, United National Liberation Front(UNLF), Rajkumar Meghen was reportedly released from Guwahati Central Jail onSaturday last, a day ahead of his scheduled release, keeping a low profile toavoid any media attention.

Accordingto the Jail Superintendent, Ranjit Baishya, Meghen was set free since hecompleted the sentence that was awarded to him on conviction.

According to reports, Meghen is expected to arrive at his home state Manipur on Monday after he served 10 years of imprisonment in Guwahati Central Jail for waging war against the state. He will get a grand reception at the Tiddim Ground in Imphal.

Therelease of the UNLF chairman comes when the Centre is putting efforts to bringa final solution to the protracted seven-decades old Naga political issues.And, over the past weeks, Manipur has seen intensive rallies and protests fromValley-based civil societies voicing against the talks fearing that the signFramework Agreement might compromise the state territorial integrity.

Accordingto sources, the Centre might also rope in Meghen for a dialogue.

As per reports, he was first kidnapped by Bangladeshi intelligence agents on September 29, 2010.

Meghen was among the 18 UNLF cadres who were convicted by a special trial court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in June 2016 in Guwahati under relevant Sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for various offences, including terrorist acts and waging war against the state.
