Tinsukia: Incomplete Project of State Govt Pose Threat to Hoolock Gibbons

The Barekuri village in Tinsukia district which is famous for 'Hoolock Gibbon' is now in danger as a project of the state government remains incomplete for two years.

In 2008, the electricity department of the Government of Assam had implemented a project for the conservation of Hoolock Gibbon in the village. The project worth crores of rupees has been implemented to replace the electric wires with cables but the project has not yet completed for which it has brought a threat to the gibbons in the village.

The materialsof the project are now lying in the jungles of the village which posed a threatto the gibbons. It has also been reported that many gibbons are killed byelectrocution.

The villagehas also been identified as a tourist destination as it is famous for thegibbons and many students from different universities also come to the villagefor research work. But this kind of negligence of the state government hasposed a threat to this primate species of genus Hoolock in the gibbon family.
