The voting for the three-tier Panchayat polls in Tripura began from 7 am on Saturday and polling has taken place only in 14 percent of seats as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the rest of the seats unopposed.
The BJP has won 5,728 seats unopposed out of 6,111 seats in GramPanchayats besides 337 of the 419 seats in 35 Panchayat Samitis and 37 of the116 seats in Zilla Parishads.
According to reports, paper ballots will be used in thePanchayat election.
However, polling is going on peacefully till the filing of thisreport.
Moreover, the opposition Congress and CPI (M) alleged that theruling BJP has applied terror tactics to prevent them from fielding candidates mostlyin areas where they succeeded in securing a decent vote share in the last Lok Sabhaelections.
The panchayat election is taking place in the areas beyond thejurisdiction of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council which hasits own local-level set-up called Village Council that will go to polls nextyear.
The counting of votes of panchayat polls will take place on July31.
