Whilethe entire country is celebrating Teachers' Day on Thursday, hundreds of teachersfrom different districts of Assam have staged protests at Dighalipukhuri and Chachalarea in Guwahati under various teachers' organisations' banner. The protest sawthe teachers shouting slogans against the government.
Theirlist of demands included immediate provincialisation of the venture schools andservices of their teachers, release of their pending dues, better pay conditionfor teachers of venture schools.
"Qualifiedteachers don't get their salaries on time and even if they do, the amount isnot what they deserve. Despite clearing the TET (Teachers' Eligibility Test), Iam still working on contractual basis," said a protesting teacher.
"Theteacher community in the State is suffering. Several teachers committedsuicide, thousands of teachers retired without salaries," added another teacherin Guwahati.
