Assamese writer, litterateur Dr Nagen Saikia has been selected for Sahitya Akademi Fellowship. The Sahitya Akademi Fellowship is an Indian literary honour bestowed by the Sahitya Akademi. Saikia is the third litterateur of Assam, to get the prestigious literary honour.
Earlier, Bagmibor Nilmoni Phukan (Senior) and noted poet Nilmani Phookan (Junior) have got the honour.
Nagen Saikia was formerly a professor of Dibrugarh University. Saikia had also been a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1986-1992 and was the vice-chairman of the Upper House from 1990-1992.
The Sahitya Akademi Fellowship is an Indian literary honour bestowed by the Sahitya Akademi, which is the Indian National Academy of Letters. The Akademi states that, "the highest honour conferred by the Akademi on a writer is by electing him as its Fellow."
