Renowned filmmaker Jahnu Barua requested the State and Central governments to release Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) chief Akhil Gogoi on humanitarian ground.
Barua appealed both the Center and the State to release Gogoi from jail as his health has been deteriorating day by day. "It is not acceptable to keep Akhil in jail during this hour of crises when the entire country is fighting against the coronavirus pandemic. During this time, many countries have released many prisoners who do not have even major criminal records. So why can't our government release the peasant leader in humanitarian ground who has been in jail for more than six months," said Barua.
Notably, Akhil has been arrested in December last while participating in an anti-CAA protest. Since then he is in jail and despite being his ill-health the government has not provided him advanced treatment. Rather he was kept in jail during this COVID-19 situation where two other leaders have tested positive for the virus.
