Reacting on Union Cabinet's decision of passing the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), the leader of opposition Debabrat Saikia said that the BJP would not have been able to take such step had the people oppose such thing in the last Lok Sabha election.

It is unfortunate that the Centre has decided to pass the bill in theParliament amidst the protests over CAB by several organizations in the state, said Saikia.

He also said that there was a time when it was asked to take a resolution in the legislative assembly regarding the Assam Accord and now they have stepped back.

He said that the people of Assam will not accept CAB and will continuetheir protests against it but will not allow the Centre to pass the bill in theParliament.

Saikia demanded that the number of indigenous people should beidentified before implementing the new land policy.
