Protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill continues in Assam as people across the State staged various protest rallies on Saturday. The Assam Sahitya Sabha along with 8 other tribal literary organizations staged protest against the much debated bill at the bank of Dighalipukhuri in the city. Many noted personalities of the State took part in this silent protest.
Meanwhile, in Barak valley, Khilanjiya Gana Suraksha Manch staged protest against the Bill. The members of the organization have been continuously staging protest against the Bill, at seven assembly constituencies under Cachar district, since January 5. On Saturday they staged protest against the Bill at Silchar by burning the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The protestors also shouted slogans against the Prime Minister and CM. They also burnt the effigy of INC Silchar MP Sushmita Dev for supporting the Bill.
On the other hand, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Friday took out torchlight rallies across the State in protest against the Bill. Notably, after the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, the AGP broke alliance with the ruling saffron party in the State. They took out the rallies in opposition to the conspiracy of the BJP government to dump illegal Hindu Bangladeshis in Assam. Former Rajya Sabha MP and senior party leader Birendra Prasad Baishya led the torchlight march in Guwahati, whereas in Teok under Jorhat district, MLA Renupama Rajkhowa led the march. Similarly, torchlight rallies were also witnessed at Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Demow, Bokakhat and other places against the Citizenship Bill.
