Congress MP in the Lok Sabha Pradyut Bordoloi opposed Centre's move to privatize Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in the parliamentary standing committee meeting held at New Delhi on Friday.

Bordoloi raised the issue of privatization of NRL in the meetingand said that it will not be acceptable to the people of Assam. The meeting washeaded by Ramesh Bidhuri.

The Congress MP further stated that the proposed move will push the state into a brink of turmoil adding that the NRL was established following the historic Assam Accord of 1985.

He also said that the petroleum refinery was set up as a centralpublic sector enterprise with the equity participation of Bharat PetroleumCorporation Limited (BPCL), Oil India Limited (OIL) and Assam government whichhas 61.65 percent, 26 percent and 12.35 percent stake respectively.

Significantly, the center has recently moved for disinvestment of BPCL saying that privatization of BPCL will also lead to the privatization of NRL as it is a subsidiary of BPCL.
