PM Modi Meets Prafulla Mahanta’s Family, Wishes Speedy Recovery

Protesting against the granting of Indian citizenship to Hindu foreigners, Ex. Chief Minister-cum-AGP Leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta made explosive comments on Wednesday, saying it would threaten the existence of the indigenous people of Assam.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, scheduled its hearing on Tuesday.

The veteran leader believed that the move will make Assam a "dumping ground for Hindu Bangladeshis".

"Our party doesn't have single representation in Lok Sabha. So, we are not able to force government for withdrawing the Bill in the assembly. Earlier, we have two MPs; that's why we could raise voice against the India- Bangladesh land boundary agreement. BJP government doesn't fulfill a single election promise" – Mahanta.

"BJP is trying to legalise illegal Hindu immigrants with the help of Citizen Amendment Bill, 2016." – Mahanta added.

Demanding immediate withdrawal of the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act 1955 (Amendment) Bill 2016, he told that if the Bill is approved in assembly, then government will be accountable for any untoward incident.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill has not been sitting well with the Assamese as it contradicts the Assam Accord of 1985, which clearly states that illegal migrants heading in from Bangladesh after March 25, 1971, would be deported.
