In response to the unauthorised gathering at the funeral of Islamic preacher Mufti Khairul Islam at Dagaon's Juria in Nagoan district on July 2, the Police has apprehended 22 people till now. Complete lockdown has been enforced for a week with effect from 3 PM today in three villages surrounding the venue.
Confirming the action taken against the flouting of social distancing norms by the unauthorised gathering, Nagaon Police tweeted today, "Nagaon Police has taken following action on the unauthorised gathering of people at Dagaon, under Juria PS, on 2.07.20. 2 cases registered on 3.07.20. 22 people apprehended till now. Total lockdown enforced for 7 days starting 3 pm today, in 3 villages surrounding the venue."

The Juria incident, where thousands of people attended the funeral of the preacher flouting the pandemic-induced safety protocols on July 2, has drawn sharp reactions from various sections. The fact that Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi also attended the funeral has magnified the controversy.
