PK Mahanta to file contempt petition against Amit Shah

The Asom Andolan Sangrami Mancha-led by former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Friday announced to file a contempt of court petition against BJP president Amit Shah in the Supreme Court. The petition will be filed within 10 days, informed Mahanta, while addressing a press conference in Guwahati.

The founder president of AGP further said that Asom Andolan Sangrami Mancha took the decision to file the contempt petition against Shah for making public statements on the National Register of Citizens (NRC), when there is a case pending proceeding in the Supreme Court related to update of NRC in Assam.

Notably, Amit Shah in a recent public rally in West Bengal had said that the updation process of NRC will be stopped until the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is passed in both houses of the parliament.

Though AGP and BJP are in alliance for the Lok Sabha Elections, Mahanta said, "The decision was taken on behalf of the indigenous people of Assam." He further urged the anti-CAB forces to unite against the Bill.
