One more dies in Itanagar violence

One more person died after security forces resorted to blank firing as the protesters defied curfew and marched towards Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu's residence in Itanagar. Prior to that one person was killed in police firing late on Friday night. The force, however, managed to save Prema Khandu's family and his house. It was not sure whether Khandu was inside the house or not at that time.

The unruly protesters torched and vandalized two police stations in the State, where an SP reportedly sustained serious injuries. Meanwhile, 6 companies of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were also brought in to restore law and order.

"The situation is very tense and uncontrollable. The state is taking all steps to calm the situation," Home Minister Kumar Waii told IANS.

The protesters were protesting against the government decision to give permanent residence certificate to some tribals groups belonging to Assam. This was however quickly rescinded by Arunachal Government but that did not end the protest.
