The Supreme Court has extended its June 30 deadline for publication of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) by a month on Monday.
The Supreme Court re-opened on Monday after a 45-day long vacation and a bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and RF Nariman reviewed the report of state NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela and extended the deadline to July 30.
Hajela used the floods in the state as the reason for the incompletion of the final draft on the previous deadline.
The bench has directed the state chief secretary and DGP of Assam to immediately provide security to Hajela and his family. The apex court also added that it will deal with all the interlocutory applications and related matters on July 31.
The first draft of the NRC for Assam had been published in December where names of 1.9 crore out of the 3.29 crore applicants were incorporated.
