NGT’s decision on Big Dam remains intact

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday made a final hearing in Delhi on Constitution Committee of 3-member Experts to study the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project.

The judgment made by the Eastern Zone Bench of the NGT on October 2016 on three member committee remained intact.

A case was filed in NGT by Assam Public Works (APW) and Tularam Gogoi demanding the formation of a committee with only one government official.

It may be mentioned that, one PM Scott (Hydrology) who is also a Government employee had violated the previous NGT judgment. He is reportedly an employee of the Central Water Commission Department and also Vice-Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board Court.

Another expert ID Gupta in a report, had already submitted his view in favour of the dam on February 2016.

APW will now approach the Supreme Court against the judgment of NGT.

On April 18 this year, NGT directed the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoE&F) to consult all sides and resolve the objections of the 2000 MW Subansiri (Lower) hydro-power project and inform the Bench.
