New-age tools used for voter awareness in Guwahati
Updated on

Election authorities in Guwahati are making full use of new-age tools to reach out to young and old voters in Guwahati to ensure maximum participation in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

The Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration is on a mission mode to open static exhibition centers (SEC) operated  by women in the most happening places of the city to create awareness about voting among people. After successful launch of two SECs at the Dispur revenue circle office and at the Meghdoot Bhawan today over the last two days, election officials in the district are now targeting to install SECs at shopping malls, college points and revenue circle offices. All these places witness a large footfall during working hours.

"Voters have become aware of technology while voting to some extent. The introduction of VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) machines alongside EVMs across all polling stations in the country has made this election significant. Now voters are in a position to do verification of the votes cast.

To celebrate women power in the election process, the district election office has decided to hand over the SECs to women officials only. "All the SECs will be manned by women staff. It's symbolic to our aspirations to see a large number of women taking part in the election process.

At a time when most people, even in Guwahati, are not aware of the introduction of VVPAT machines, the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration has decided to display before the enthusiastic citizens how to verify their votes in VVPAT machines.
