Two cops from Assam Police, Bishmita Likhak (Veerangana squad) and Huneshwar Bora, a 24th AP IRBN jawan have been conferred with the 'Virangana Savitribai Phule National Award 2019' and 'Babu Jagjeevan Ram National Samman Award 2019', respectively.
The awards were conferred by Babu Jagjivan Ram Kala Sanskriti and Sahitya Akademi at Rajendra Bhawan in New Delhi in presence of former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.
Bishmita originally hails from Narayanpur in Lakhimpur district and Huneshwar Bora is a resident of Kokapathar in Tinsukia district.
Assam Police sets up India's first female commando unit 'Veerangana' to tackle rising crime against women in the state. The special platoon has been raised to check violence against women on the streets of Assam.
The 'Veerangana' team have been trained in 'silent drill' known only to US Marines, in martial arts, bike riding and horse riding along with the handling of lethal and non-lethal arms.
