In an unfortunate incident, a school going minor girl committed suicide in the wee hours of Sunday by jumping into the Deepor Beel in Suraj Nagar near Assam Engineering College in Guwahati's Jalukbari area.
The minor, a 13-year old student of Gauhati University Model School, ended her life in the deep waters as locals and her father alleged a 'love relationship' for the fatal end.
The class 9 student, a resident of the same area, was recovered by a team of State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) divers after hours of search and rescue operation.
Few locals and shopkeepers of the area noticed a body floating in the water and immediately informed the police following which a search and rescue operation was carried out by SDRF.
Speaking to media persons, the father of the deceased said that the girl was in constant touch for the last 2-3 years with a guy from another community and religious background to which they did not approve owing to her age and innocence. However, the day earlier, the father called up the boy's mother and discussed about the growing love relation between the two.
Following the discussion, mother of the boy scolded the girl and asked her to refrain from meeting her son again, who was elder to the girl. The night went peacefully and the girl behaved normally throughout, the father said.
But once the father got hold of the news, he is now accusing a murder and fails to believe that his daughter committed suicide as the place of her death was near the boy's house and his mother was the first one to inform him about the suicide.
Police have started an investigation into the matter.
