The All Assam Students Union (AASU) along with 27 other ethnic organisations on Thursday staged a massive protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 at Dispur, Guwahati. Thousands of people, leaders and workers participated in the rally.

Addressing the gathering at Dispur, AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya voiced against the Bill and said, "Assam is not a dumping ground for illegal Bangladeshis." Bhattacharya further requested Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal to clear his stand on the Bill.

"According to the Assam Accord, those who entered before 1971, irrespective of religion, can stay in Assam with full citizenship rights. But those who entered post 1971, should be deported. There will not be any compromise since Assam bore the brunt till 1971. Assam is a small state and we cannot load beyond 1971," Bhattacharya added.

On the other hand, various leaders of students group claimed that the Centre and Assam government will face massive protests in coming days if the Bill is not withdrawn.
