Manipur forms two committees to monitor inrush of illegal immigrants

The Manipur state government has constituted two separate committees on the state and district level to monitor the influx of illegal immigrants in the state after the publication of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh shared on Thursday.

The Chief Minister said during a press conference that the two committees will start taking steps to check and verify the people. He mentioned that on Thursday, the Manipur police identified 29 people who are not permanent residents of the state at the airport in Imphal.

"In relation with Assam's NRC list, Manipur government is inquiring about influx of illegal immigrants from Assam and neighbouring states. We have taken measures to prevent entry of illegal immigrants and formed two committees – state level and district level monitoring committees," Singh shared in the press conference.

"From reliable sources government got info that some illegal immigrants are coming to Imphal by air. So, the state government has established a check point inside Imphal airport premises and today we identified 29 people who aren't permanent residents of the state. Police is monitoring," he added.

The NRC final draft was released on July 30 and had the names of 2.89 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants, leaving out more than 40 lakh people.
