Last attempt to block NRC fails in Supreme Court

The last attempt to block NRC in the Supreme Court has failed as the Supreme Court bench referred the application regarding the status of siblings of the D-voters, before the original bench.

Earlier, the Chief Justice of India Deepak Mishra created a new bench consisting of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice S Abdul Nazeer to look into the petition regarding the status of the siblings of D-voters and those declared foreigners in the upcoming NRC. This new move may complicate the release of NRC on July 30 now.

The matter was heard on Monday and has been referred to the already existing bench comprising of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohington Nariman.

This is noteworthy that the Gauhati High Court had rejected an earlier petition seeking inclusion of the names of the siblings of D-Voters and Declared Foreigner in the upcoming final draft of the NRC. This was challenged by Congress MLA Kamlakhya Dey Purkaystha and Nurul Huda in the Supreme Court.
