Large Numbers of Tourist Flock to Kaziranga Amid Pandemic

The Kaziranga National Park (KNP) has attracted large numbers of tourists from across the country after it reopened for tourists on October 1. The park was closed for several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and for the regular monsoon interval.

Both domestic and foreign tourists visited the park after it reopened. "This year the tourists footfall is very high than last year. The elephant safari has not been started and it will start from November 1. The jeep safaris have been started and we have received good numbers of tourists. At least 700-800 jeep safaris are booked everyday in both Bagori and Kohora range," said an official of the Kaziranga National Park.

The official further stated that last year there were no tourists but this year the numbers are good till date. The resorts are full of tourists and people have to book jeep safaris a week prior to their visit to the park or else it is difficult to get jeep safaris.

Speaking to Pratidin Time, the official said that the Agoratoli range has not yet opened and once it opens, we will receive even more tourists. "The foreign tourists are comparatively less than other years as the air service is closed in most of the countries. If everything goes well, we will receive more tourists till April," the official said.

He further stated that the best season to visit the park is between February-March as the jungles are burnt down and the visitors can see the animals closely. Declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, the Kaziranga National Park is home to 2,401 one-horned rhinos, which is equivalent to two-third of the entire world's one-horned rhinos.
