Future bleak for KKHSOU PG aspirants

Pranamika Hazarika is a school teacher but she wanted to pursue Post Graduation in English from Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU). But today her dream has got dashed as the KKHSOU authorities have not opened the PG admission in English due to UGC order, debarring them to do so.

Not only Pranamika but thousands of students who wanted to pursue Post graduation through Distance learning more in Political Science, Journalism, history, Economics and Sociology are looking at a bleak future as the UGC stopped KKHSOU from offering any course in PG except Assamese.

The UGC is not forthcoming the exact reason, nor the KKHSOU could pin point what was their problem. The KKHSOU was doing well, building new campus and enrolling thousands of students and coffers were always full. But not any more.

Their cash cow the Diploma in elementary Education have also been take away from them and given to the National open School

This is noteworthy the University Grants Commission(UGC) has barred Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University(KKHSOU) from taking any PG students in any stream apart from Assamese from the current educational year.

This is a serious setback for the University as well as students as huge number of students used to be enrolled in the KKHSOU every year and that run into hundreds.

Although both the VC and Registrar are tightlipped about it but the KKHSOU websites reflected the new decision as they have removed all other subjects except Assamese in this current educational year.

The KKHSOU online admission portal now only offer Assamese MA. The KKHSOU used to run several PG courses in humanities like English, Education, History Social Work and Political Science and Social Work.

The University used to provide 65 various programs and that have ben curtailed to 16 only. Notably the DLED, the distance learning course of elementary education have also taken away and given to the National Open School.

That was a cash cow for the KKHSOU as thousands of studentsused to get enrolledevery year in a bid to be government teachers through this course.

The UGC has not given any reason for this sudden change although the Registrar A. Chaudhury has been camping in New Delhi for last few days to meet the UGC chairman to reverse the situation, as it has become a big blot for the University.

On the other hand, the UGC has given full permission to the Institute of Distance and Open Learning(IDOL) of the Gauhati University full go ahead for Post Graduateadmission..

The KKHSOU Vice Chancellor Hitesh Deka was sought out for his comment on the development but the University authorities have not yet responded to this dramatic development. The UGC decision came in the last week of August of this year.
