JD(U) opposes Citizenship Amendment Bill

JD(U) secretary-general K C Tyagi has condemned the decision of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for its decision to go ahead with the submission of the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 to the parliament on January 7.

Tyagi said that "This would lead to a demographic change in the entire region. The Bill will destroy the ethnicity of Assam and North East. North East region is not dustbin for illegal immigrants. Despite BJP being our ally, we strongly oppose the Bill."

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (Jan 4) made it clear that the government is going to pass the much debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 on the ongoing session of the parliament.

It may be mentioned that JD(U) had adopted a resolution opposing the Bill by describing it as a clear threat to indigenous languages and culture of Assam.

The Bill is likely to be taken up during the Winter Session of Parliament.

Earlier, an eight-member AGP delegation had met Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar in Patna over the weekend and sought the party's support against passage of the Bill.
