The JD (U) – Janata Dal (United) – on Sunday came out against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and termed it a clear threat to indigenous people of Assam.
It may be mentioned here that the All Assam Students Union (AASU) had earlier approach JD (U) for support against the bill.
JD (U) passed a resolution passed at the party's national executive on Sunday and asked the Centre to work towards mitigating people's concerns about the bill.
The resolution stated that the agitations expressed by AASU over the proposed bill have a strong base. "Any step which may jeopardise social peace and communal harmony of Assam and the whole North-East region, should be taken after serious consideration" it said.
"We demand that the Government of India give serious consideration to all the contentious issues with regard to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and mitigate the concerns of the people of Assam" the resolution added.
