Taking Assam to the global front, renowned film makers Jahnu Barua for his film 'Bhoga Khirikee' (Broken Window) and Rima Das for 'Bulbul can Sing' have been nominated for the 'Best Director' award at the New York Indian film festival 2019.

The esteemed film festival will stage its 19th edition in New York from May 7 to May 12.

A Priyanka Chopra and mother Madhu Chopra production, under the banner Purple Pebble Productions, Bhoga Khirikee revolves around a female protagonist named Togor, whose life has been turned upside down due to the three men in her life – her father, her husband and a stranger.

Rima Das through her film, Bulbul can Sing brings an intuitive coming-of-age drama about a young girl, named Bulbul, living in rural India, fighting her way through love and loss as she figures out who she really is.

Four Assamese films will also be screened at the festival, which are:

  • Jahnu Barua's Bhoga Khirikee (Broken Window);
  • Rima Das's Bulbul Can Sing;
  • Bhaskar Hazarika's Aamis; and
  • Roopa Barua's Daughters of the Polo God.

The New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) is the oldest film festival screening premieres of feature, documentary and short films made from, of, and about the Indian subcontinent in the Independent, arthouse, alternate and diaspora genres.
