The Government of Assam on Monday conferred the 1st Biju Phukan Award 2019 to renowned actor Bishnu Kharghoria in Dibrugarh. On the other hand, Narendra Modi-led BJP government in the Centre has also announced Bharat-Ratna to Assam music maestro Bhupen Hazarika.
Several people and organizations in the State have already expressed that Bharat-Ratna has been given to Dr Hazarika only to control the raging protest against the much debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
The former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said the BJP governments in both Centre and State have been doing politics in the name of honouring the artists from Assam.
The senior Congress leader alleged that the current government in the State has been functioning only in pen and papers. He also said that ministers of this government cannot be found in Assam Secretariat; rather they are busy flying in helicopters. Gogoi further added that the government does not know the ground reality of the State, but it is only shouting slogans.
Meanwhile, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who is currently visiting Assam, claimed on Saturday that BJP government had honoured Gopinath Bordoloi with Bharat Ratna. He retaliated BJP government has given Bhrat-Ratna to Bhupen Hazarika.
