In Guwahati, toilets of every hotel, restaurantevent those of five stars are now public toilet and anyone can use that withoutordering food.
This was informed by GMC Commissioner Debeshwar Malakar who also said that Guwahati city did not have enough public toilets and under smart city projects, 33 bio-toilets have been installed but that is not enough.
Hence as per the Centre's guidelines, the toilets of hotel and restaurants irrespective of their star category have to allow the general public to use their toilets as public toilets.
This provision has already been included inthe Municipality license.
Urging people to use those, the Commissioner also informed that any refusal by the hotel authorities would invite penalties.
He also informed that the same would also be applied to shopping malls.
This has been welcomed by the citizens ofGuwahati. The GMC also announced an innovative way to handle the usual offenderwho used to throw garbage into the road.
"Anyone who can take a photo of that person can send it to our WhatsApp no with the details of the person. We will keep the informants' details confidential and shall fine the offender and pay Rs 500 to the information supplier as prize money" said Mr Malakar.
