The Kandulimari village at Dhing in Nagaon district of the state was thrilled on Sunday evening as the village's most dear daughter Hima Das, the new sprint queen of India has won a silver medal in 400 m race at the Jakarata Asiad.
There was celebration on Hima's achievement everywhere in the greater Dhing area in the district. People came out to the streets , burst crackers , played cymbals , some even danced to tune of popular Assamese songs.
" I am happy that Hima has won a medal in her favourite event 400 m race in the Asiad. She was trying her best to win Gold but finally win Silver medal. Hope Hima will continue to improve her performance in days to come. She will compete in two other events . I wish she will win medal in both the coming events", said Ranjit Das , father of Hima Das.
On Sunday at the Jakarta Asiad , Hima clocked 50.79 sec to run 400 m. Bahrain's Salwa Eid Naser wins Gold medal in the 400 m race.
Her 50.79 sec in 400 m run was a new national record.
Hima is the second athlete from Assam, who has won a medal at the Asian track and field event. In 1966 Bangkok Asiad , Bhogesrwar Barua won a Gold in 800 m race.
" After 52 years , an athlete from Assam has been shined at Asian Games. We are very happy today. Hope government will create more sports infrastructures across the state in coming days. Then only we will have more Hima Das like athlete ", said a senior person at Hima's native Kandulimari area.
Hima Das, the Golden Girl from Assam had recently made India proud in world track and field events by winning a Gold in 400 m run. She is the first athlete from the country to win a medal in World track and field event.
The sprinter had been practicing hard for her events at the Jakarta Asiad. With her personal coach Nipon Das by her side during the most crucial days of her three athletic events in Jakarta.
