Assam's 18 year old prodigy is not a prodigy anymore as she has scripted her name in record books now as a record breaker and will be recognized worldwide for her speed on the tracks. Sprinter Hima Das today created history as she sprinted her way to a gold medal in the 400 metre event of IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Finland's Tampere.
She rocketed her way past other sprinters to reach the finishing line in 51.46 seconds to claim the top position. Andrea Miklos of Romania came second with a timing of 52.07 seconds to claim silver while USA's Taylor Manson took home bronze after clocking 52.28 seconds.
Hima Das now becomes the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in any track and field events in World Championships.
The Assam girl clocked an Indian U-20 record of 51.32 seconds to finish sixth in the Commonwealth Games 400m final in Gold Coast in April.
Following that, Das kept on improving her time as she smashed all records for India Under-20 by clocking a 51.13 seconds finish at the recently concluded National Inter State Championships in Guwahati.
We congratulate Hima Das on her feat and making Assam and India proud!
